Udder Wash and Teat Dip Recipes

Regardless if you are milking a goat, a cow, a yak, or even a camel there is one things that is the same across the board, you will need to have some kind of udder wash and some kind of teat dip. Naturally you can buy chemical filled and usually expensive commercial products, but that isn't how we operate. Another option is washing with simple soap and water and while this works (for cleaning initially) we like to do a bit more to ensure our girls and milk stay healthy and is a bit more protected from bacteria. Our solution is a homemade udder wash and teat dip. Both are chemical free, cost effective, made with ingredients you have at home already, and extremely effective. All ingredients in both recipes are geared toward healing and preventing bacterial growth. I have played around with my recipes recently and have found all these to be very effective. I like to give options in case you do not have access to a certain ingredient. Udder Wash: Recipe 1 (I have used this recipe for almost 3 years and it has worked fantastic)

Material needed:

-1 spray bottle

- castile soap (I buy the kind with tea tree oil in it)

- tea tree essential oil

- lavender essential oil

- 1 microfiber wash cloth , regular wash cloth or small towel, or disposable paper towels any of these work

Recipe 2

- 1 capful Young Living Thieves all purpose cleaner

- fill remainder of spray bottles with distilled water

How to make:

1) Place 1 TBSP of castile soap in spray bottle. Put 10 drops lavender EO and 10 drops tea tree EO. Fill remaining with distilled or tap water.

How to use:

- shake up then spray all over teats and udder liberally. Use cloth to wash off udder thoroughly. Repeat as many times as necessary to get udder and teats totally clean.

Teat Dip:Recipe 1

Materials Needed:

-1 small canning jar or storage bowl

- coconut oil, olive oil, or avocado oil

- tea tree EO

- lavender EO

- distilled water

- castille soap ( I buy the kind with tea tree EO in it)

Recipe 2:

-1 capful thieves cleaner

-1-2 TBSPs of oil of choice in jar

- fill with distilled or tap water

How to make:

1) put 1-2 TBSPS of oil of your choice in jar

2) put 1-2 TBSP castille soap in jar

2) place 10 drops lavender and 10 drops tea tree EO 3) fill with distilled or tap water

How to use:

- shake well before each use. Then dip each teat into jar once done milking. I keep my girl's on the stand after applying teat dip for about 5-10 minutes before turning them out to pasture or putting them back in the pen. Their teat orifices will stay open for 10 -15 minutes post milking so making sure they keep their udder out of a dirty area is important. The teat dip is what protects their udders from bacteria entering until their orifices close. The oil in the teat dip not only helps keep bacteria away, but it also helps keep their udders and teats from cracking and drying out. If you find their udder is drying out (especially with first fresheners) add a little more oil to your teat dip or rub some coconut or olive oil on the udder a couple times a day. If the dryness or cracking is severe check out my all natural recipe for udder balm.

Happy Milking!
